Choosing a Color Scheme for Your Website

When designing a website it is important to spend time carefully choosing your color scheme. As your probably already know different colors are associated with different meanings and feelings. It is important your choose a color scheme that matches the feeling your are trying to pass on to your website visitors.

 

Below is a list of colors and their meanings you may want to take into consideration:

 

Red (warm color)

 

Red quickly attracts attention. Although it can be overwhelming as a main color is a great accent color when used on "buy now" and "click now" buttons. Red represents urgency and is great for call now advertisements. Lighter shades of red are more often associated with love and romance which may be great for a dating website but may not be as great for your "buy now" button on your pet products website.

 

Orange (warm color)

  

 Orange is also a great color for drawing a visitors attention to a particular spot. It is an intense color but not as intense as red. Orange is often associated with warmth, sunshine and energy. 

 

Yellow (warm color)

 

Yellow is also associate with warmth and sunshine as well as happiness. Yellow should never be used as a main color or for text as it is often difficult to read text on a yellow color as it can be straining on the eyes. Text should never be yellow in color for obvious reasons.

  

Green (cool color)

 

Green represents the environment, nature, healing and harmony. Green is soothing while at the same time represents money.

 

Brown (neutral color)

 

Brown is also a color that represents nature and the earth. It is often associated with structure and stability.

  

Blue (cool color)

 

Blue represents the sky and the sea. Blue is a calming color that represents heaven, vision, and peace. Blue often represents trustworthiness. It is not uncommon to see dark blue used in logos of larger companies who are projecting a large corporate feeling of stability to their customers.

  

Purple (warm or cool color)

 

Purple signifies luxury, magic and uniqueness. Purple is a combination of red and blue, therefore, represents a balance of the red and blue features of energy and stability.

  

White

 

The color white is a base color. White is a wonderful color to have on a website as it represents clarify, cleanliness, goodness and safety. It is very easy for site visitors to read black text on a white background and this helps them stay on a website longer.

 

Black

Black is also a base color that represents the absence of light. Black is associated with power and strength. Too much black on a website will send site visitors running for the hills. This is another great accent color when used carefully and never a good primary color.
